• Facebook Birthday Wishes

154 That would be the number of people who posted a greeting on my Facebook wall on my birthday. Take note, six people posted belated birthday greetings the next day. 54, 18 That would be the number of likes my birthday selfie garnered along with the number of comments. 9 That would be the number of birthday greetings I received via LinkedIn, six from people I never even met. To all those who’ve greeted me over the years via social media, I thank you all from the bottom of my heart. But here’s a true confession: I am not one to post birthday greetings on someone’s Facebook wall, preferring instead…

How To Go Viral – a lesson from VidCon

As a social media manager and content creator, one of the most important insights I took away from Vidcon was this: People share a post, blog link, image or video in order to express who they are. When creating content, ask yourself, what will your video or piece of content say about yourself, about your audience? ARE YOU A CAT-LOVER? http://youtu.be/mg1H8gf6jms DO YOU LIKE INSPIRING COMMERCIALS IN FOREIGN LANGUAGES? DO YOU LIKE TO CRY? CAN’T GET ENOUGH OF “FROZEN” COVERS?” These are videos that have “Gone Viral” that elusive quality that Brands and Companies demand of their agencies and social media managers. But believe me, it’s hard to “make” something…

  • Social Media: 3 Tools To Schedule Your Posts

The young padawan was impressed by some of the tools I had introduced him to that help me manage social media for my own accounts and for clients. From scheduling posts to finding news to share, two of my most important tools in my Social Media Toolbox are the ones that allow me to schedule posts and curate news. Don’t You Wish You Could Quit Facebook?

For social media managers like me, Facebook is a necessary evil. Most days, I just want to quit Facebook.  As far as social networking goes and marketing, I personally think it is a dead end. A part of me still loves it though, because it keeps me connected to friends and family near and far.  Who would’ve thought that I’d know what my Kindergarten classmate or my college professor was up to halfway around the world, even after all these years? Thanks to the News Feed, we can keep abreast of the latest news, good or bad, personal or celebrity-oriented, and of course, the latest means. “The Problem With Facebook,” according to Derek Muller aka Veritasium,  is…

Facebook Chain Status Updates – the new Chain Letter

I remember receiving chain letters in the mail. There were those threatening ones that you had to send out to x number of people lest some awful fate befell you. And then there were those that rewarded you with something a sticker, stationery or something that you would only receive once you had sent out the same letter to the required number of people. As a sticker and stationery collecting kid, I never thought of it as a pyramid scam but of course that’s what it was. These days snail mail may be dead but chain letters still exist in the form of chain emails or worse, Facebook status updates.…

  • Give Kids a Shot At Life with Life-Saving Vaccines

Shot At Life is a movement to protect children worldwide by providing life-saving vaccines where they are most needed. Did you know that one child dies every 20 seconds from a disease that could be prevented with a vaccine? We are lucky here in America, where vaccines are readily available. It isn’t like that in other parts of the world. Believe me, I know. I grew up in the Philippines, where poverty is a critical issue. Over there, those who live in remote areas do not have access to modern amenities, clean water, let alone, life-saving vaccines. I know of many who have died from preventable diseases like pneumonia, diarrhea,…

  • How Restaurants are Using Social Media

My smartphone is a constant companion when dining out. I check in on Foursquare or Yelp, sometimes both. I am thrilled when I get a special offer just for checking in – I’ve had free appetizers, drinks and discounts. When my food comes, I take photographs, post them on Instagram and Twitter, sometimes Facebook. (Yeah, I’m one of those.) So you can see how social media is well intertwined with the 21st century dining experience. Now that's a rainbow! • Thoughts on Small Business and Social Media

Small Business Saturday is on November 30th and so it’s been on my mind lately. I love supporting my own neighborhood coffee shop, bookstore, restaurant, nail salon etc. And often, when I think about how I can help a small independent store survive and thrive in this economy, naturally, my thoughts turn to social media, which is my passion as well as it is my profession. And so I meet the owner, shop keeper and we get to talking. There are those who embrace social media, there are those who are open to experimenting with it, and then there are those who are simply unconvinced about its value. What I’d…

  • Music Monday: 1st YouTube Music Awards Misses the Mark

The first You Tube Music Awards was held on Sunday – live from New York! – and I must say it was a bit of a let-down.  It was chaotic, to be sure, but it was also boring and contrived. The numbers don’t lie – only over 177,000 were tuned into the worldwide live stream by Eminem’s performance.  I mean, this is YouTube people, where a husky like Mishka can generate a couple of million views just by barking “I love you,” in dog language! I have to say I had high hopes for the #YTMA especially with the Jason Schwartzman videos before the awards. Like this   And this:…
